  1. Our Safeguarding Commitment

Herstory Beauty Academy is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all learners, staff, and visitors. We recognise our legal and moral duty to safeguard the welfare of all individuals, particularly those who are vulnerable or at risk.

  1. Scope

This policy applies to all staff, learners, contractors, and visitors. It covers all activities, both on-site and online, associated with Herstory Beauty Academy.

  1. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

We have a named Designated Safeguarding Lead who is responsible for implementing safeguarding procedures and acting as the first point of contact for concerns. The DSL’s details are displayed prominently within the academy.

  1. Definitions

  • Safeguarding: Protecting people’s health, well-being, and rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect.

  • Abuse: Physical, emotional, sexual, or neglectful acts that cause harm or potential harm.

  1. Recognising and Reporting Concerns

All staff have a duty to:

  • Recognise signs of abuse or neglect

  • Record factual, accurate information

  • Report concerns immediately to the DSL

We take all concerns seriously and act promptly in accordance with local safeguarding procedures.

  1. Prevent Duty

Herstory Beauty Academy actively upholds the Prevent Duty as outlined by the UK government. We work to prevent learners from being drawn into extremism or terrorism by:

  • Promoting British Values (see section 7)

  • Encouraging critical thinking

  • Raising awareness of radicalisation risks

  • Providing staff training to recognise signs of radicalisation

  • Working in partnership with external agencies when required

  1. British Values

We embed British Values into our curriculum, policies, and day-to-day practice:

  • Democracy – encouraging learner voice and participation

  • Rule of Law – reinforcing the importance of laws and codes of conduct

  • Individual Liberty – supporting learners to make informed choices in a safe space

  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance – fostering respect for all faiths, cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs

  1. Safer Recruitment

We follow safer recruitment practices, including DBS checks, reference checks, and safeguarding questions during interviews. All staff receive safeguarding training appropriate to their role.

  1. Online Safety

We promote safe online behaviour and provide guidance on digital safeguarding. Learners are taught how to identify risks, report concerns, and stay safe when using technology.

  1. Confidentiality

Information is handled sensitively and shared only with appropriate individuals or agencies on a need-to-know basis. Learners are informed when information may need to be shared for their safety.

  1. Whistleblowing

Staff are encouraged to raise concerns about malpractice, unsafe practices, or safeguarding breaches. We have a clear Whistleblowing Procedure in place to protect those who speak up.

  1. Monitoring and Review

This policy is reviewed annually or in response to significant changes in legislation or guidance. All safeguarding practices are monitored to ensure continuous improvement and compliance.
