Prevent Duty & British Values

1. Our Commitment

At Herstory Academy, we are committed to safeguarding our learners from all forms of extremism, radicalisation, and exploitation. In line with the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, we recognise our legal duty to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.”
This is known as the Prevent Duty.

We are equally committed to actively promoting British Values throughout our teaching and learning environment, ensuring all learners feel safe, respected, and valued.

2. What Is the Prevent Duty?

The Prevent Duty is part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy. It requires education providers to:

  • Identify and respond to signs of radicalisation

  • Safeguard learners from extremist influences

  • Promote understanding and tolerance between different cultures and beliefs

  • Embed Prevent awareness in staff training and learner development

Herstory Academy takes a proactive and preventative approach by integrating Prevent Duty into our curriculum, policies, and safeguarding practices.

3. British Values at Herstory Academy

We embed and promote the five fundamental British Values across all areas of academy life:

  • Democracy – Encouraging student voice, feedback, and active participation

  • The Rule of Law – Teaching the importance of rules and respect for legislation

  • Individual Liberty – Supporting learners to make informed choices in a safe environment

  • Mutual Respect – Building inclusive learning environments grounded in empathy

  • Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs – Celebrating cultural diversity and challenging stereotyping

These values are not only taught explicitly through lesson content but also demonstrated in the behaviour we expect from our learners, tutors, and visitors.

4. Staff Responsibilities

All staff at Herstory Academy are trained to:

  • Recognise potential signs of radicalisation or extremist views

  • Know how and when to report concerns using our Safeguarding procedures

  • Uphold British Values within their teaching practice

  • Maintain an inclusive, respectful learning environment

Staff receive Prevent Duty training as part of their induction and ongoing CPD.

5. Learner Awareness

We empower our learners to:

  • Understand what extremism and radicalisation are

  • Be confident in expressing their views respectfully

  • Report any concerns they may have about themselves or others

  • Appreciate cultural and social diversity

We provide age-appropriate resources and activities to help learners build resilience and critical thinking skills.

6. Reporting Concerns

If you have concerns that a learner or member of staff may be at risk of radicalisation or extremist influence, please report it immediately to our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
All concerns are treated seriously and handled sensitively in line with our Safeguarding Policy.

7. Monitoring and Review

This policy is reviewed annually or in response to updates in legislation or guidance. We monitor how Prevent and British Values are embedded across our curriculum and centre culture and continually improve staff training and learner engagement.
